There was a Jesus freak who had a sign that said "Dying of Cancer? TURN TO JESUS!!!" we had to talk to him, and he then told us that cancer came from satan... |

AtheistTeam ::: Favorites All this talk about who has the authority to speak on behalf of their own beliefs has gotten away from what I feel is the important issue: we need to stop making excuses for irrational people and this guy's a nut. -The A-Team myspace(.)com/atheistteam 07-10-17 01:26:10 __________________________________________________
Orca4245 ::: Favorites Absolutely, I would not disagree with you. I just don't think this man was one of those Christians. Or, at least, there was no reason to think that he was from your encounter. 07-10-16 20:17:35 __________________________________________________
C0ct0pus ::: Favorites i was raised christian (17yrs), all of my family is christian, and i've read most of the bible, so technically, i know plenty about your religion. i don't claim to know what anyone is trying to say just because of their religion, even if it were the same as mine. 07-10-16 16:12:21 __________________________________________________

haxormodstudios ::: Favorites While I may have misspoken about the word "belief", my point was that I have evidence that we can observe and discuss for my belief of evolution, while there is no such evidence on the topic of evil and God's existence. But again, cancer is not evil. I don't agree that the best way of resolving contradictions is seeking specialists. I would never expect a "specialist" to be on the corner with this sign. Besides, for all I knew he could have been said "expert". 07-10-16 12:48:45 __________________________________________________
haxormodstudios ::: Favorites Anyone familiar with Metallica might know that the song "The God That Failed" was written by Hetfield because his mother died of cancer. She was a devout Christian and refused medicine because she maintained that God would save her. There are Christians like that. 07-10-16 12:41:16 __________________________________________________
Orca4245 ::: Favorites I never claimed to know what Christians are thinking. As a westerner, I have a very good familiarity with western culture and thought - moreso than someone from a different culture. So yes, I think I am justified in thinking I am more likely (though not definite) to interpret the intentions of a Christian correctly than an Atheist is. I'm familiar with the "language". 07-10-16 10:21:17 __________________________________________________
Orca4245 ::: Favorites I'm not sure if my original comment got through. You are confused about what a 'belief' is. If you have a proposition, say, "I am a human", and you think that is true, then you hold the belief that "I am a human". Even if it is so self-evidently true that doesn't stop it being a belief. I recommend you read the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy's entry on 'belief', or at least the intro. 07-10-16 10:18:25 __________________________________________________
Orca4245 ::: Favorites You took his sign as saying that Jesus would cure you of cancer. That's not at all what I think it meant, nor do I think it was the point that the man tried to defend while you dialogued. By saying you should 'seek God first then medicine' he was making the general point that we should put our relationship with God foremost. I don't think at all that he was suggesting you try to get God to heal you first, and failing that seek medicine. I don't know any Christians like that. 07-10-16 10:17:18 __________________________________________________
Orca4245 ::: Favorites Point taken, I misunderstood the point you were trying to make. But my main point still stands - that these apparent contradictions are best resolved by seeking people who specialize in their understanding. Anyone with sufficient knowledge can ambush and bamboozle the layman representative of a particular viewpoint. You're not going to convince anyone but the choir with videos like this. 07-10-16 10:13:38 __________________________________________________ |
